Tokyo Strong Training Camp Opens in Honolulu

HONOLULU, Hawaii (July 14, 2021) -- USA Weightlifting opened its Tokyo Strong training camp in Honolulu this week, which will serve as the last stop on the Road to Tokyo for Team USA weightlifting athletes.

All eight Team USA Weightlifting Olympians and

their personal coaches will travel through the ‘Alohilani Resort on Waikiki to train, meet with high performance staff and prepare for the journey to Tokyo, Japan for the Olympic Games.

“We brought everything athletes will need to perform here to Honolulu so they can be in the best possible shape for Tokyo,” USA Weightlifting CEO Phil Andrews said.

Beyond the state-of-the-art training hall, USA Weightlifting brought its full high performance staff to Hawaii for the exclusive use of the Olympians. USA Weightlifting Senior Director of Sport Performance and Coaching Education Mike Gattone and USA Weightlifting Technical Director and 3-time Olympic Champion Pyrros Dimas are serving as head coaches for Team USA . Joining Gattone and Dimas on the sport performance team in Hawaii include registered dietitian Meagan Nielsen; sport psychologist Dr. Melissa Streno,PsyD, CMPC; sleep expert Dr. Jeff Durmer, M.D. Ph.D.; medical lead Kelley Humphreys, DC, MS, EMT-P.

“We have assembled a great team of experts who are here to serve our Olympians,” Gattone said.

With travel restrictions in place in Japan, Olympians, coaches and staff heading to Tokyo will depart Honolulu in waves. Olympians and their personal coaches will return to Honolulu within 24 hours of competing to join friends and family assembled in Hawaii through the duration of the Games.
