USA Skateboarding Team Makes History In Olympic Street Skateboarding Debut

Tokyo, Japan (July 26, 2021) — History was made this weekend at Tokyo’s Ariake Urban Park Venue in the inaugural Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Street Skateboarding events with six of USA Skateboarding's National Team members competing.

Arizona’s Jagger Eaton was awarded the first

Olympic Skateboarding medal in history after winning Bronze for the United States in Men’s Street. Nyjah Huston (Laguna Beach) and Alexis Sablone (New York City) both advanced to the finals in their respective events. Sablone's score of 13.57 was just 0.92 points away from a podium finish in Women’s Street and landed her in 4th place. Nyjah placed 7th in Men's Street.

Jake Ilardi, Mariah Duran, and Alana Smith didn't advance to the finals but made us all proud, representing the United States and skateboarding on sports’ largest stage. Their talent, hard work, dedication, and character as Olympians inspire us and will continue to inspire millions of skateboarders around the world for years to come.

Josh Friedberg, USA Skateboarding CEO: “I’m incredibly proud of all our Olympians, and especially our first Olympic medalist Jagger Eaton. The diversity and level of talent in both the Men’s and Women’s Street Skateboarding events was astounding and I can only imagine how many kids were inspired to start rolling on their own skateboarding journey over the past couple of days. As a lifelong skateboarder, one of the most exciting parts of this historic Olympic debut was that Skateboarding in the Games looked and felt like the competitive skateboarding we all already know and love. This is a testament to the hard work that has gone on behind the scenes for many years by the IOC, the Tokyo Organizing Committee, World Skate, the national federations around the world, and the skateboarders and allies who have fought endlessly to make sure that skateboarding had a voice in the Olympic Movement.”

When asked today in a press conference about the age of skate competitors and what it will look like for the 2024 Olympics, Eaton said:

“I have a 13-year-old brother, Koston, and he rips. And if you were to ask me a competitor I’m afraid to compete against, it’s my 13-year-old brother I shared a room with my whole life. One thing that I think is cool that I didn’t have as a kid, I didn’t really have the Olympic competition to look forward to in my career, and these kids now have that. I think that’s going to add a lot more motivation, and it’s going to give skateboarding a whole new light for the kids that are coming up.”

USA Skateboarding would like to thank our Olympic Street Team, coaches, staff, partners, sponsors, the USOPC, World Skate, the IOC, and Tokyo, Japan for hosting us this week and putting on two amazing skateboarding events. Also thank you to our fans, donors, and everyone who has supported us thus far. We’re looking forward to the Park Skateboarding events next week, Paris 2024, and the future of USA Skateboarding and Olympic Skateboarding as we begin this new chapter in skateboarding’s epic history!
