Golden Eagles Drop A Tough One To Wildcats

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team saw an eighth-inning rally fall painfully short Saturday in the finale of a four-game California Collegiate Athetic Association series against Chico State.

The Golden Eagles rallied from a 6-2 deficit and had the go-ahead runs on base in the eighth inning, but fell to the Wildcats, 6-5, at Reeder Field. After winning the first two games of the series, Cal State LA dropped the final two by close scores of 3-1 and 6-5 and had to settle for a split.

After Kyle Blackman's sixth-inning grand slam gave the Wildcats a 6-2 lead, the Golden Eagles got one run back in the bottom of the inning on a towering home run from Sean Watkins that made it 6-3.

The Golden Eagles then nearly took the lead in the eighth inning only to see the inning end on an unfortunate note.

Armett Johnson reached on an error to start the inning and Andre Gregory was hit by a pitch with one out. Watkins walked to load the bases and reliever Jae Wagner came on to get Nic Bereaud for the second out. Adam Gordon dropped a two-run double down the left-field line to drive in two and make it 6-5. Jorge Garcia then did exactly what he should have done -- he jumped on a pitch on the outer half of the plate and lined it to right field, but it went right at Blakeman, who made the catch to end the inning.

Ayala picked up a two-out hit in the ninth, but Wagner got the final out to earn the save.

Saxon Andross got the start for the Golden Eagles and he was outstanding through five innings before tiring in the sixth. Chico State loaded the bases on a pair of soft singles and a walk and Blakeman erased a 2-1 deficit with a grand slam home run. The Wildcats added a run to make it 6-2.

Dylan Suppan blanked the Wildcats over the final 3 1/3 innings to give the Golden Eagles a chance for a comeback win.

Cal State LA had taken a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Anthony Moreno doubled in a run to tie the game and he scored on a run-scoring single by Noe Garcia.

Cal State LA will return to action with the opener of a four-game series at San Francisco State on Friday.

Broncos Drop Series Finale 9-7 Against Sonoma State

POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team finished with a series split against Sonoma State, falling short of a comeback in a 9-7 loss on Saturday afternoon at Scolinos Field.

GAME ONE:
GAME SUMMARY:

• The Broncos jumped out ahead early in the final game of the series, as Drew Cowley singled to score Cesar Lopez before a two-RBI single up the middle by Nick Peifer gave CPP a 3-0 advantage.
• The lead was short lived for the Broncos as Sonoma State stormed back in the top of the second inning scoring five total runs. With the bases loaded, the Seawolves hit a bases clearing double through the left side of the field to tie the game. SSU continued their hitting streak with another double and single to take a 5-3 lead.
• Sonoma added to their lead in the fourth inning, hitting a sacrifice fly before a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch drove in another run for the visitors.
• SSU's lead grew to 8-3 after an RBI-single in the fifth inning.
• The Broncos got one run back in the bottom of the fifth as Nic Hernandez hit a solo home run to right field, his second straight day with a homer.
• CPP added another run in the sixth as Bryce Etchandy came around to score from second base after a fielding error by Sonoma.
• Etchandy gave the Broncos hope in the seventh inning, connecting for a two-RBI double to center field to come within one run of the tie.
• Sonoma State added an insurance run in the top of the eighth, hitting an RBI single to take a 9-7 lead into the final inning.
• In the bottom of the ninth, the Broncos managed bases loaded with two outs after Sonoma gave up two walks while hitting a batter but couldn't drive in the runs, ending the game on a flyout.

 
KEY PERFORMERS:

• Michael Gomez took the loss for CPP, giving up five runs off of five hits while totaling four strikeouts through three innings of work.
• Tim Holdgrafer threw three innings in relief with three runs off of four hits while Anthony Mizrahi allowed one hit and one run through one 1/3 innings and Peter Beattie gave up two hits in one 2/3 innings.
• Peifer and Etchandy each finished with two RBIs while Hernandez led the Broncos with two hits on the day.

 
COMING UP NEXT:
The Broncos will venture north next weekend as they prepare for a four-game road series against Cal State East Bay beginning on Friday, April 6.

Stanford University: No Foolin'

Cardinal takes sole possession of first place with 14-11 win at No. 15 USC

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - For the second straight Sunday, freshman Galen Lew scored the game winner for No. 16 Stanford lacrosse to cap a comeback victory over No. 15 USC.

Stanford (9-3, 6-1 Pac-12) has won six in a row and nine of its last 10 games, and moved into sole possession of first-place in the Pac-12 with the 14-11 win at McAlister Field.

On April Fools Day, the Cardinal was up to the same old tricks. Much like last Sunday, Stanford faced a multi-goal deficit in the second half and dominated the finish to pull out a victory over the Trojans. 

No team led by more than one until USC (7-5, 5-2 Pac-12) scored back-to-back goals for a 10-8 lead with 21:27 to play. Stanford took over from there with six of the game's final seven goals. 

Just 22 seconds after freshman Areta Buness pulled the Cardinal within one, Lew tied the game with 15:58 to play. Less than a minute later, senior Kelsey Murray, who finished with four points (two goals, two assists), gave Stanford the lead at 11-10.

Lew scored the game's decisive goal when senior Dillon Schoen found her cutting across the middle. Lew buried the shot in the back of the net to make it 12-10 with 7:48 to go. The Trojans, who were held scoreless for the final 18:08 of regulation and 8:37 of overtime last weekend, tallied their only goal over the final 21:27 to pull within, 12-11.

Freshman Ali Baiocco, who finished with a career-best six points (four goals, two assists), and senior Maggie Nick, who tallied three points (two goals, assist), scored some insurance for the Cardinal to finish off Stanford's third Top 25 win of the season -- and second on the road.

In the first half, there were four lead changes and six ties. The team's mostly alternated goals. Stanford had five different goal scorers, but USC took a 7-6 lead into intermission.  

DaCar earned her ninth win of the season with seven saves, while Genesis Lucero (eight) and Julia Massaro (five) led the Cardinal in draw controls. Massaro also matched team-highs with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Buness finished with two goals and two draw controls and Lew added an assist to also finish with three points.

Stanford out shot the Trojans, 19-7, in the second half and 35-22 overall. The Cardinal also led 10-3 in draw controls over the final 30 minutes, and 17-10 for the game. Both teams scooped up 20 ground balls, while Stanford was a perfect 18-for-18 on clear attempts.

Last Sunday, Lew scored a short-handed game-winner in sudden victory overtime to lift the Cardinal over then-No. 13 USC, 12-11, at Cagan Stadium. Stanford rallied from a four-goal deficit in the final 13 minutes. A full recap and highlights are here.

The Cardinal is a half game ahead of Colorado (7-4, 5-1 Pac-12) for the top spot in the Pac-12. The Buffaloes, who rallied from a seven-goal deficit in Boulder to beat Stanford in the first-ever Pac-12 lacrosse game, will visit The Farm for a rematch inside the Stanford football stadium on Friday, April 13 at 7 p.m. PT 

Prior to that, Stanford goes out-of-conference for the last time this season. The Cardinal welcomes UC Davis and Fresno State to The Farm -- a midweek matchup with the Aggies on Thursday at 6 p.m., and a Sunday matinee at noon against the Bulldogs.

Pitching stifles Oregon in rubber match

STANFORD, Calif. – No. 3 Stanford threw nine shutout innings and completed the comeback series win over Oregon on Saturday at Sunken Diamond.

"These last couple days were huge for us after being hit in the mouth on Thursday," said Clarke and Elizabeth Nelson Director of Baseball David Esquer. "What you saw here the last two games was playoff-level baseball. The score doesn't show how close today's game was, so hats off to our players for hanging in and finishing the job."

The Cardinal (20-3 overall, 5-1 Pac-12) claimed the 2-1 series win after losing the opener on Thursday. The winning run came in the third inning with Tim Tawa scoring on a wild pitch. Starter Erik Miller lasted 4.0 innings, scattering four hits and three walks while striking out two. Miller has not allowed a run in each of his past two starts, lowering his earned-run average to 3.09.

Kyle Stowers' third home run of the season in the bottom of the eighth extended Stanford's lead to 3-0 before Beau Branton's RBI single to score Christian Molfetta from second made it 4-0. Jacob Palisch, who replaced Miller in the top of the fifth, earned his third win of the season.

Jack Little picked up his ninth save in as many opportunities, allowing two hits and striking out three in 1.2 innings pitched. Little has yet to allow a run this season and has allowed just 12 base runners in 20.1 innings pitched. Stowers finished with two hits, with Tawa, Nico Hoerner, Stowers and Molfetta accounting for each of Stanford's four runs.  

Stanford returns to action on Monday against Gonzaga. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. PT with live streaming and statistics available at GoStanford.com. Stanford then travels to face Santa Clara on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before a three-game series at UCLA in Los Angeles.

Cardinal Notes

• Palisch pitched 2.2 innings, allowing three hits and striking out one. The freshman has not allowed a run since the opening weekend, lowering his ERA to 0.47.
• Handley picked off another runner at first, his second pickoff of the series. Handley has also thrown out eight of 13 stolen base attempts on the season.
• Austin Weiermiller and Will Matthiessen each pitched .1 inning, setting up Little.
