Gators Take Series as Cougars Fall in Sunday Doubleheader

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The weekend ended on a sour note for the Cal State San Marcos baseball team as it was swept in Sunday's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader against San Francisco State by scores of 11-5 and 10-9 at CSUSM Baseball Field.

GAME 1: CSUSM 5 – SFSU 11

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • SFSU got on the board first with a two-RBI double down the left field line by Jackson Kritsch before Brady Dorn tallied an RBI walk with bases loaded.
  • The Gators went up 4-0 in the third with an RBI single through the left side by David Mansell.
  • The Cougars struck back in the fourth inning as Buck scored on a wild pitch before Garcia delivered on a two-RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-3.
  • An RBI single by the Gators' Harley Lopez put the Gators up 5-3 in the fifth.
  • Trevor Rogers posted a three-run homer for SFSU and put the Gators ahead 8-3 in the eighth.
  • After SFSU's Dorn scored on a wild pitch, Rogers delivered again with a two-RBI single to right and gave the Gators an 11-3 lead in the ninth.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Danny Johnson hit an RBI ground out to score Anthony Rodriguez from third before an RBI single by Wilhite scored Garcia.

QUICK HITS
  • CSUSM dropped to 10-7 (6-5 CCAA) while SFSU improved to 8-0-1 (6-0 CCAA).
  • SFSU's Jordyn Eglite (1-0) took the win for the Gators as he threw seven innings with one strikeout and three runs allowed on eight hits and two walks.
  • Starter Brandon Bachman took the loss for the Cougars as he threw just 1.1 innings while allowing three runs on three hits and five walks.
  • Reliever Dylan Wannamaker posted the third-most strikeouts by a CSUSM pitcher this season with eight as he threw 5.2 innings with two runs allowed (one earned) on five hits and two walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Gators went up 2-0 in the first inning thanks to an RBI single by Trevor Rogers before a sacrifice fly to center by Shaq Robinson.
  • Ott posted his sixth sac fly of the season in the bottom of the first inning to cut the Cougars' deficit to 2-1.
  • A two-run homer by Harley Lopez put SFSU up 4-1 in the second.
  • The Gators' Ethan Lageson hit a two-run double to center field and put the Gators ahead 6-1 in the third.
  • SFSU put another run on the board in the fourth inning on a sac fly by Robinson.
  • CSUSM posted a five-run inning in the bottom of the fourth with a sac fly by Nashea Diggs, an RBI single by Van Til and a three-run homer by Ott.
  • The Cougars took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth at 8-7 thanks to an RBI double by Johnson and an RBI single by Zach Shuberg.
  • A solo shot by SFSU's Rogers evened the game at 8-all in the top of the sixth.
  • Andrew Garcia hit an RBI single down the left field line to score Van Til and put the Cougars on top once again at 9-8 in the bottom of the sixth.
  • With two outs and a runner on third after a throwing error in the top of the ninth, SFSU's Jonah Gonzales hit an RBI single to knot the game at 9-all before he stole and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He then crossed the plate on another wild pitch and put the Gators up 10-9.

QUICK HITS
  • CSUSM dropped to 10-8 (6-6 CCAA) while SFSU remained undefeated at 9-0-1 (7-0 CCAA).
  • Ott (1-1) took the loss for the Cougars as he threw two innings of relief while striking out two and allowing three runs on four hits, a walk and two wild pitches.
  • SFSU's Dylan Madole (1-0) posted the win after he threw two innings with one strikeout and one run allowed on three hits and four walks.
  • This was CSUSM's third consecutive series loss to SFSU.
  • Ott now has 19 sacrifice flies for his career – tied for the second most in program history.

CSUSM will hit the road for a four-game series at Sonoma State beginning on Friday in Rohnert Park, California.
