Bears Thump George Washington To Start East Coast Trip

Cal Boasted Eight Different Goal Scorers

WASHINGTON D.C. - The California women's lacrosse team continued its trend of racking up goals early as the Golden Bears jumped out to a 4-0 lead before defeating George Washington, 15-8, Friday afternoon in Washington D.C.

In the last four games combined, Cal has now outscored its opponents, 14-5, in the opening 10 minutes.

The Bears stayed true to form in their gameplan of spreading the wealth around as Cal boasted eight different goal scorers. The Bears were led on the scoresheet by Nikki Zaccaro who tallied six points, including a career-high tying four assists. Susie Ropp garnered a hat trick - part of her five points on the day - and Catherine Roxas posted her first career hat trick. Kirsten Swanson also secured three points on two goals and an assist.

Ropp scored on all three of her shot-on-goal attempts, while Roxas found the back of the net on three of her four shots on goal.

The Bears took control of the game for good in the final five minutes of the first half when Cal rattled off five straight goals to take a 10-3 lead into the break. Zaccaro netted two of her goals during that span.

The other Cal scorers on the day were Sophia Cerino, Cameron Gordon, Marisa Kuberra and Ashley Ward.

In goal, Jenny Wilkens made 10 saves, the 21st double-digit save performance of her career and third this season. She also led Cal in ground balls with three. Wilkens accomplished all this in 47 minutes of work. Makayla Ward came in for the final 13 minutes and picked up three saves.

Lizabanks Campagna was a strong contributor on defense, registering three draws, two ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Swanson and Eliza Christman each tallied five draw controls.

Cal was a perfect 22-for-22 in clear attempts.

The Bears conclude their east coast trip against Mount St. Mary's on Sunday, March 3, at 9 a.m. PT.
