The Waves loaded the bases and broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning, holding on for the win to move to 11-12 on the year. UCSB falls to 18-5.
After the Gauchos tied the game in the fourth inning, Pepperdine loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. Matt Crowder (Atherton, Calif.//BYU) scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch and then the Waves scored twice on a failed double play attempt by UCSB. Kevin Chandler would get the visitors out of the inning, but the damage was done for the Waves.
Evan Dunn (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman HS) worked a scoreless eighth inning and then Kiko
Garcia (Chula Vista, Calif./St. Augustine HS) came in with two runners on and one out in the ninth, picking up the save with a strikeout and fly ball to centerfield. Max Green (Rolling Hills Estate, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) got the win in relief, tossing 3.2 strong innings after taking over in the fourth. Green allowed just two hits and no runs to pick up his first win of the season.
The Waves struck first in the third inning, getting a sacrifice fly from Matthew Kanfer (Playa Del Rey, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) and an RBI double from Manny Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS). UCSB would answer with two runs in the top of the fourth, scoring on a pair of sacrifice flies. Austin Bernard (Valley Center, Calif./Valley Center HS) tacked on the insurance run for the Waves in the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly of his own.
Pepperdine posted eight hits in the game to five for the Gauchos. Crowder went 3-for-4 at the plate and scored a run to lead all players. Bernard was 1-for-2 on the day, driving in a run and scoring two more. Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) also scored twice for the Waves.
Josh Adams had a 2-for-2 day for UCSB and Kenny Chapman took the loss to fall to 1-1.
The Waves will be back in action this weekend when they host San Francisco for a three-game West Coast Conference series.
