OAKLAND MUSEUM OF CALIFORNIA ANNOUNCES JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014 FAMILY PROGRAMS

Friday Nights @ OMCA returns with new food trucks and family activities, new drop-in programs celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Black History Month, flagship Lunar New Year event returns
Oakland, California - The Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy and Black History month with new family-friendly activities throughout January and February 2014. Additional programs join the lineup for popular evening series Friday Nights @ OMCA, back every week starting January 10 in 2014, featuring half-off admission for adults and free admission for ages 18 and under! On February 9, OMCA welcomes back the annual Lunar New Year Celebration and Other Asian Traditions for its 13th year, celebrating the Year of the Horse with dance, music, food, arts and crafts, and more!OMCA always offers great deals on admission for families, with admission for youth ages 9 to 17 at $6. Welcome in the New Year at OMCA with the first Free Sunday of 2014! Learn all about the Bay through the major exhibition Above and Below: Stories From Our Changing Bay, the stunning photography of Peter Stackpole: Bridging the Bay, and film in Bay Motion and A Cinematic Study of Fog in San Francisco. Explore all the galleries of the Museum-for free!

Friday Nights @ OMCA

Fridays in January, starting January 10, 2013, 5-9 pm

Oakland's popular weekly night market is back for a new year of fun and festivities! Join OMCA and Off the Grid on 10th Street every Friday starting January 10 for a taste of local music, food, art, and culture! The popular family-friendly drop-in workshop this month is "create your mini dream world", inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., every Friday from 5 to 8 pm! The last Friday of the month---January 31---includes story time with Oakland Public Library from 6 to 6:30 pm. Adults enjoy half-off Gallery admission and ages 18 and under are free!

The family-friendly drop-in activity, "make your own mini hero figurine", pays homage to Black History month, every Friday from 5 to 8 pm. The last Friday of the month, February 28, also features story time with Oakland Public Library from 6 to 6:30 pm. Adults enjoy half-off gallery admission, and ages 18 and under are free!

13th Annual Lunar New Year Celebration and Other Asian Traditions: Year of the Horse

Don't miss this favorite annual festival, as OMCA rings in the Lunar New Year with an array of Asian traditions in arts, crafts, food, demonstrations, live music, dance, family activities, and so much more. Elements of Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, Tibetan and other Asian cultures will be featured in the daylong celebration, including performances such as lion & dragon dances, acrobats, music, dance, magic show, martial arts, storytelling, book readings and cooking demonstrations for kids. Try your hand at traditional crafts to take home.All activities included with Museum admission.

OMCA Connect | Public Opening of 'We Dream in Art' Mural Banner

Join the Oakland community during the final Friday Nights @ OMCA in February as we celebrate the unveiling of a new major public art project: the 'We Dream in Art' mural banner on Oak and 12th Streets! See the Oakland community's answers to the question "What is your dream for your community?" in beautiful artworks created by community members at festivals and events throughout the year.

VISITOR INFORMATION

The Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) is at 1000 Oak Street, at 10th Street, in Oakland. OMCA is situated between downtown Oakland and Lake Merritt. Museum admission is $15 general; $10 seniors and students with valid ID, $6 youth ages 9 to 17, and free for  children 8 and under and OMCA Members. During Friday Nights @ OMCA, admission after 5 pm is half-off for adults, and free for ages 18 and under. OMCA offers onsite underground parking and is conveniently located one block from the Lake Merritt BART station, on the corner of 10th Street and Oak Street.
