UCLA scored five times in the seventh to win the series opener at Utah.
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The third-ranked Bruins rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh inning to record a 9-5, comeback victory at Utah on Thursday at Dumke Family Softball Stadium.
UCLA improves to 29-2 overall and 5-2 in Pac-12 play, while the Utes fall to 17-13 and 2-5 in league.
The Bruins had 12 hits from eight different players, as senior Kylee Perez, junior Paige Halstead, redshirt freshman Aaliyah Jordan and freshman Kinsley Washington each recorded two-hit contests.
Freshman Holly Azevedo moved to 9-0 on the season, striking out three in two innings of shutout relief, giving up two hits. Senior Selina Ta'amilo started and fanned two in five frames, giving up five runs (four earned) and eight hits.
The Bruins scored a pair of runs on two bunt singles and an error in the top of the first. Freshman Briana Perez laid down a bunt in front of the Utah third baseman for a single, then Kylee Perez dropped one down in front of the plate. The Utes' catcher threw high to first, as Briana scampered home, and when the ball went all the way to the wall, Kylee scored on a little-league home run to make it 2-0.
Utah cut its deficit in half in the second on a triple by Kelly Martinez, who scored on an error. The Utes tacked on three more in the fourth on an RBI double by Alyssa Palacios, an RBI triple from Hailey Hilburn and a squeeze bunt by Abby Robertson to go up 4-2.
The Bruins equaled things up in the fifth. Washington started with some great baserunning, leading off by taking an extra base for a double to right-center, moving to third on a fly ball out and scoring on a passed ball. Then after rounding the bases little-league style in the first inning, Kylee Perez touched all four bases in trotting form, sending out her first homer of the season to right to make it 4-all.
Utah re-took the lead though on an RBI single by Martinez to go up 5-4, but down to their last at-bat, the Bruins scored five times in the seventh. Washington led off with a single to right and moved to third when Briana Perez reached on an error on a bunt attempt, with Perez taking second on the miscue. Kylee Perez followed with a chopper to short, but Washington ran on contact and slid in under the tag to equal the score at five.
Jordan then doubled to right-center to bring in Briana Perez to give the Bruins a 6-5 lead. A single to center by junior Brianna Tautalafua would plate Kylee Perez to make it 7-5. Two outs later, Halstead tripled to left-center to drive home Jordan and junior Imani Johnson, who was running for Tautalafua, to extend the lead to 9-5.
