LONG BEACH, Calif. , April 5, 2025 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ -- For 2026, Toyota's sports car lineup will light up with the GR86 Yuzu Edition. This
vibrant exterior color is a nod to a memorable special edition of the GR86's predecessor, the Scion FR-S Release Series 1.0.Based on the GR86 Premium trim, the special edition will feature 18-inch matte black wheels and other striking black accents throughout. Inside, the Yuzu edition features a black interior with yellow accents. Customers will find black Ultrasuede® - trimmed sport seats with yellow perforation and yellow stitching on the steering wheel, parking brake handle, and door trim.
Brembo® brakes enhance stopping power, and SACHS dampers provide additional stability while preserving the GR86's signature playfulness. Customers can personalize their vehicle and add accessories such as a cat-back exhaust with silver GR logo tips and a Yuzu edition body kit for greater self-expression.
For the 2026 model year, the GR86 will be available in three trim levels: the GR86, the GR86 Premium, and the GR86 Yuzu Edition. All versions will offer a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions and will be powered by a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder boxer engine, generating 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque.
The GR86 will arrive at Toyota dealerships in the fall of 2025. Only 860 Yuzu editions will be assembled for the North American market by 2026.
Toyota will announce the manufacturer's suggested retail price and specifications for all trim levels later this year.
Pure driving experience in every version.
Every GR vehicle is designed and crafted with precise attention to detail and a unique driving character. The GR86 is a sports car focused on performance and balance. Its compact dimensions and responsive chassis make it feel agile both in tight corners and on open roads, delivering an engaging driving experience that emphasizes fun over outright power.
Last year, the GAZOO Racing engineering team made tuning updates to provide an even more enjoyable ride. Some of the updates included a revised throttle map to increase the ease of automatic gear adjustment (or "blipping"), and additional torque control to provide more direct throttle response and linearity for improved controllability at all speeds.
All of these updates will carry over to the 2026 models along with the Performance Package available on the GR86 and GR86 Premium trims that includes Brembo® brakes and SACHS dampers. The Performance Package is standard on the GR86 Yuzu edition. SACHS dampers are filled with high-pressure nitrogen and oil and are designed to absorb vibrations across a wide speed range, maximize ground contact and support firm, stable steering while balancing road feedback and ride comfort. Red-painted Brembo 4-piston front and 2-piston rear brake calipers grip smooth 12.8 x 1.3-inch front rotors, with 12.4 x .79-inch rotors at the rear.
The shock absorbers and brakes complement the GR86's chassis, which is known for its taut and agile feel. Constructed from a combination of high-strength steel, hot-stamped steel, and aluminum, each material in the chassis is strategically placed to provide drivers with roll and pitch balance that helps maximize control. Up front, diagonal crossmembers and heavy-duty fasteners link the front suspension and frame. At the rear, a full-ring structure and heavy-duty fasteners connect the chassis and suspension mounts. For additional reinforcement, structural adhesive has been added throughout the underbody. Together, these enhancements create a cohesive and connected chassis.
Light and fun to drive
All GR86 models feature modern engineering, technology and comfort, while retaining its roots as a lightweight sports car.
Weighing just 2,811 pounds for the manual-equipped base model and 2,851 pounds for the automatic transmission model, the GR86 is one of the lightest sports cars Toyota has developed. The aluminum hood, front fenders, and roof panel help keep body weight down, while details like the use of structural adhesives in the chassis and seats that weigh more than six pounds less than the previous 86 generation help save precious ounces in the name of maximum control.
The naturally aspirated 2.4-liter FA-24 engine delivers 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque and is tuned to deliver peak torque at 3,700 rpm, resulting in a responsive and powerful driving experience. Zero-to-60 acceleration comes in 6.1 seconds for the 6-speed manual transmission and 6.6 seconds for the available 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission (ECT-i). With either transmission, the GR86 comes equipped with a Torsen® limited-slip rear differential for enhanced cornering traction.
Sports car purists will love the GR86's 6-speed manual transmission. With the push of a button, drivers can engage track mode or deactivate Vehicle Stability Control (VSC). In the automatic transmission GR86, additional clutch plates and a high-capacity torque converter allow for smooth delivery of the 2.4-liter engine's increased power and torque.
Inside, a low, driver-centric cockpit with a digital instrument panel, push-button start, climate control with LED dials and piano-key switches, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls keep the driver in complete control of their surroundings. On the 6-speed automatic transmission, steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters offer enthusiasts a dynamic driving experience. Drivers can choose between Normal, Sport, or Snow modes. When in Sport mode, the transmission detects brake and accelerator operation and vehicle behavior to automatically select the optimal gear, giving drivers the control they crave.
An 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system and a six-speaker audio system come standard on the base trim, and an eight-speaker system is standard on the Yuzu edition and Premium trim. For seating, the Premium trim comes with Ultrasuede® and leather upholstery with black stitching, six-way adjustable front seats with dual-level heating. The base trim has six-way adjustable GR-embossed black fabric with sport fabric side bolsters. Rear seats feature Ultrasuede® upholstery on the Premium trim and sport fabric on the base trim.

Inspired by motorsport
To earn the GR badge, GR sports cars go through an intensive track testing process approved by Akio Toyoda , aka Morizo, and the drivers and engineers at Toyota GAZOO Racing. Toyota GAZOO Racing works alongside ROOKIE Racing to compete in various endurance and touring car races like the Super Taikyu in Japan, to help provide insight and develop new technologies through motorsport. The team uses real-world competitive racing to hone what makes a GR a GR.
In 2023, Toyota GAZOO Racing North America developed the GR Cup one-make racing series featuring modified GR86s. The series is designed to celebrate car culture and motorsports by fans, for fans. It provides an entry-level professional racing opportunity at a more accessible price point, allowing more drivers to compete and develop.
Toyota's commitment to motorsports is one of the many reasons it also offers a complimentary one-year membership to the National Sports Car Association (NASA), giving GR owners the opportunity to experience the world of high-performance driving on a closed circuit. Owners will enjoy several benefits, including a complimentary High Performance Driving Event (HPDE) and discounted admission to NASA-sanctioned events.
