FAIRFAX, Calif. – The Pepperdine men’s golf team finished up a
record-setting Alister MacKenzie Invitational on Tuesday, as the Waves
posted an excellent finish with a tie for second place after recording a
program-record score of 33-under.
Additionally, senior Frederick Wedel
(The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) tied for second place
individually with a 16-under 197. Wedel already held the school’s
54-hole record at 20-under and the 16-under now gives him the top two
spots on that list.
The Waves shot a total of 819 (267-278-274) over the two days at
the par-71 Meadow Club. California won its own tournament by nine
strokes and Pepperdine tied with Arizona State. The Waves beat two other
Pac-12 schools as well as three West Coast Conference rivals (San
Francisco, BYU and San Diego).
Pepperdine’s previous 54-hole record of 31-under was set in fall 2007 at the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate.
Wedel, who shot 64-67-66 to give him a total of 197, finished
just one shot behind the medalist, Cody Blick of San Jose State. Wedel’s
final round included six birdies, giving him 16 for the tournament
(plus two eagles against only four bogeys).
Freshman Roy Cootes
(Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) had a breakthrough event, tying
for eighth place with a 10-under 203 (65-72-66). His third round
included his tournament-high third eagle, as well as four birdies.
Also, freshman Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) tied for 22nd with a 5-under 208 (69-69-70), junior Cody McManus (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) tied for 38th with a 1-under 212 (69-70-73) and junior Robbie Geibel (Pembroke Pines, Fla./American Heritage HS/Louisville) tied for 41st with an even-par 213 (69-72-72).
Cootes (three), McManus (two) and Wedel (two) all finished with
multiple eagles for the tournament and were three of only seven players
to do so. Cootes also tied for the best showing on the par-5 holes at
9-under.
During the tournament’s first day, the Waves set the best 36-hole
score in program history (23-under) and had the second-best 18-hole
score (17-under).
Pepperdine continues its fall season at Cal State Northridge’s
Bill Cullum Invitational, set for Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley,
Calif., next Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 19-20).
