MADISON, Wisc. – For the second season in a row the
UCLA men’s cross country team showed its strength at the Wisconsin
Adidas Invitational, held Friday morning on the Thomas Zimmer
Championship Cross Country Course.
The men finished ninth overall and were led once again by senior Lane Werley, who placed 14th. The women placed 34th and unleashed freshman Carolina Johnson, who shined in her debut and finished 26th overall.
For the second consecutive week on a national stage Werley paced the
Bruins. The senior crossed the line in a time of 23:49.9. Senior Sergey Sushchikh ran second for UCLA and was 68th overall with a time of 24:16.5 to lead a pack of Bruins that included Jonah Diaz (78th, 24:20.3), Myles Smith (86th, 24:23.7) and Austin O’Neil (88th, 24:24.2).
Senior Nick Hartle finished 129th with a time of 24:36.7 while the Bruins were rounded out by Sean Davis in 187th place with a time of 25:01.1.
On the women’s side, Johnson didn’t take long to make an impression. The newcomer was 26th with a time of 20:15.4, in her first race of her collegiate career.
Emily Scharmann ran number two for the Bruins as she placed 169th with a time of 21:38.7. Aliya Shirif was 189th with a time of 21:47.6 while Roni Yamane was right behind in 190th with a time of 21:48.0.
Fresman Julia Rizk was 225th in a time of 22:25.6 and Jessica Cushing-Murray finished 232 with a time of 22:40.3 while Sabrina Seay rounded out the UCLA top-7 with a time of 23:01.4 in 237th place.
The Bruins will stay local next week as they will compete in the
Titan Invitational. The meet that is hosted by Cal State Fullerton, will
be held on Friday, Oct. 23 and begin at 4:45 p.m.
