SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Pepperdine women’s soccer
team lost in overtime on the road on Sunday afternoon, falling 1-0 to
No. 25 Santa Clara in the second overtime period.
Mariana Galvan
scored in the 103rd minute for the home team to give the Waves the loss.
Pepperdine falls to 6-6-2, 1-3-0 WCC with the defeat, while Santa Clara
improves to 9-4-0, 2-1-0 WCC.
The Waves held firm through the
second half and didn’t allow the Broncos to get a good chance in the
first overtime period. However, just over two minutes into the second
overtime, Galvan received a cross in the box, took a touch and sent home
the game-winning goal.
Santa Clara held a 13-4 shot advantage in the game, putting seven balls on target.
Pepperdine put just two shots on goal in the game, but one came late in the first overtime when Christina Settles (Oceanside, Calif./Oceanside HS) sent a ball on frame that was saved by the Broncos’ Andi Tostanoski in the 97th minute.
The
Waves and Broncos played scoreless through the first half in what was a
defensive struggle early. Each team took just two shots in the opening
period, with Santa Clara putting the only two on target.
“I’m proud of the girls this weekend,” said head coach Tim Ward.
“Although we didn’t get the results we were looking for, we showed an
immense amount of character and quality in many facets of our play. It’s
obvious that goals breed confidence and right now we’re in a spell
where the ball doesn’t seem to want to go in. We know goals will come,
though, and that this team has tremendous character. We’re looking
forward to the opportunity to improve and we have a deep resolve to
right our trajectory in the games ahead.”
Settles finished the game with two of Pepperdine’s four shots and Rylee Baisden (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) and Rachael Collins (Littleton, Colo./Valor Christian HS) had the other two. Hannah Seabert (Riverside, Calif./Woodcrest Christian HS) finished with six saves in the game.
The goal was Galvan’s third of the season, as she took three attempts on goal in the game.
The Waves have a bye week coming up, before hosting their final two home games against Gonzaga (Oct. 23) and Portland (Oct. 25).
