Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis Returns to Segerstrom Center for the Arts

Costa Mesa, California - The world-renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis arrives at Segerstrom Center for the Arts on Friday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Segerstrom Hall. The much admired and critically acclaimed orchestra performs the music of Count Basie and Duke Ellington for its return visit to the Center. “One rarely hears this music played with such technical brilliance, stylistic authenticity and tonal sheen…Here were the throaty reeds, percussive trumpet blasts and visceral sense of swing that have made the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra the greatest large jazz ensemble working today,” notes Chicago Tribune.

With a tireless touring schedule and a fervent commitment to impart jazz music for all audiences, Jazz at
Lincoln Center Orchestra comprises of 15 of today’s finest jazz soloists and ensemble players: Wynton
Marsalis, music director and trumpet; Ryan Kisor, Sean Jones, Marcus Printup, trumpets; Chris
Crenshaw, Vincent Gardner, Elliot Madon, trombones; Walter Blanding, Victor Goines, Sherman
Irby, Ted Nash, Paul Nedzela, reeds; Dan Nimmer, piano; Carlos Henriquez, bass and Ali Jackson,

Hailed as “an extraordinarily versatile orchestra” by the Los Angeles Times, the Jazz at Lincoln Center
Orchestra under the leadership of musical director Wynton Marsalis draws from an extensive repertoire
that includes original compositions by Marsalis, Ted Nash and other members of the ensemble, as well as
the masterworks of Ellington, Mingus, Coltrane and other great jazz composers.

Jazz at Lincoln Center also regularly premieres works commissioned from a variety of composers
including Benny Carter, Joe Henderson, Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath, Wayne Shorter, Sam Rivers, Joe
Lovano, Chico O'Farrill, Freddie Hubbard, Charles McPherson, Marcus Roberts, Geri Allen, Eric Reed,
Wallace Roney and Christian McBride, as well as from current and former Jazz at Lincoln Center
Orchestra members.

Over the last few years, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra has performed collaborations with many of the world’s leading symphony orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Russian National Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Boston, Chicago and London Symphony Orchestras, the Orchestra Esperimentale in São Paolo, Brazil and others. In 2006, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra collaborated with Ghanaian drum collective Odadaa!, led by Yacub Addy, to perform “Congo Square,” a composition Marsalis and Addy co-wrote and dedicated to Marsalis’ native New Orleans. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra has also been featured in several education and performance residencies in the last few years, including those in Vienne, France; Perugia, Italy; Prague, Czech Republic; London, England; Lucerne, Switzerland; Berlin, Germany; Sao Paulo, Brazil; Yokohama, Japan and others.
