Alvin Ailey dance courses offered at Sac State
Two members of the prestigious Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Foundation will present a three-day residency dance intensive of classes, lectures and dance techniques – many of them open to the public – Feb. 21-23 at Sacramento State.
Ailey (1931-1989) founded the company in 1958 to enrich modern dance heritage and preserve the African American cultural experience. He is credited with popularizing modern dance and his company gained the nickname “Cultural Ambassador to the World.”
Sylvia Waters and Ana Marie Forsythe are master teachers with the company and will lead the series of courses that include instruction in the Horton Technique, a history of the Ailey legacy, and a lecture discussion on the impact of his work.
“Choreographer Alvin Ailey had far-reaching effects on American culture,” says Sacramento State Dance Professor Lorelei Bayne. “It is an honor to have these extraordinary master teachers on our campus to share Ailey’s legacy.” Bayne invites the public to attend the sessions, especially the culminating lecture.
The Feb. 22 and 23 sessions are open to the public. Because space is limited, pre-registration is required and there will be a $5 charge at the door. The sessions are an introduction to the Horton Technique from 10:30 a.m.-noon, and an Ailey Repertory class from 1:30-2:45 p.m. They are offered both days in Yosemite Hall Room 187.
A Saturday lecture and video from 3-5 p.m. in the University Theatre is free.
