West Hollywood Mayor Pro Tempore Abbe Land Applauds President Obama’s Plan to Protect Children and Communities by Reducing Gun Violence

West Hollywood, California - West Hollywood Mayor Pro Tempore Abbe Land, a longtime supporter of stricter gun laws, applauds President Obama’s new plan to protect children and communities by reducing gun violence.
“Thank you President Obama for making ending gun violence a top priority!” said West Hollywood Mayor Pro Tempore Abbe Land.  “I applaud you for your historic and comprehensive plan to protect our communities from gun violence – an issue I care very passionately about. Gun violence is a pressing issue and I am pleased to see you take a strong and clear stance to develop a complete plan to save lives. Now, we must focus our efforts on calling to Congress to support this legislation!” continued Mayor Pro Tempore Land.
            The President’s plan includes:
1.     Closing background check loopholes to keep guns out of dangerous hands;

2.     Banning military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines and taking other common-sense steps to reduce gun violence;

3.     Making schools safer; and

4.     Increasing access to mental health services.

In 1996, Mayor Pro Tempore Land led West Hollywood to be the first California city to ban the sale of Saturday Night Specials handguns that led 31 other cities to pass similar legislation. The State of California eventually banned these junk guns. In 2007, she co-authored ordinances requiring the mandatory reporting of the theft or loss of firearms, and an ordinance which requires firearm dealers to post warning signs where guns and ammunition are sold.
