Sacramento Business Review sees an improving economy

While there are still plenty of issues ahead, the regional economy is growing and will continue to do so through 2013. That’s one of the findings in the ninth edition of Sacramento Business Review, scheduled for release Wednesday, Jan. 23, at a special gathering of economic experts. The event will feature keynote speaker Chris Ailman, chief investment officer for CalSTRS.
The Review is a partnership between Sacramento State’s College of Business Administration and the Chartered Financial Analysts Society of Sacramento (CFA). It includes reviews and forecasts by 14 financial analysts, covering sectors such as banking, real estate and small business.
Sacramento’s recovery may not be as aggressive as those in other parts of the state or nation, but its economy has been improving slowly since the end of 2011, says Sanjay Varshney, dean of the College of Business Administration. “Slowly the jobs are coming back, so we are very optimistic about 2013,” he says.
The kickoff event runs 3-5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Sacramento State’s Alumni Center, whereSacramento Business Review’s analysts will present their findings and forecasts. Keynote speaker Ailman is a frequent contributor on national media programs about the economy.
Other findings in the new issue include:
·         Consumer spending is expected to grow but faces headwinds, including some mini-cliffs and payroll tax increases.
·         Small businesses face tough choices from changes in tax and health-care laws.
·         Job growth in construction and financials is expected to rebound.
The publication has gained a solid reputation among the region’s business and community leaders. Varshney credits that to the expertise and hard work of the contributors. “The really good thing aboutSacramento Business Review is it’s not just one opinion,” Varshney says. “We have 14 strong analysts who come together and provide an expert commentary based on real facts and figures.”
